Things to do

Water and wildlife

No trip to Matlacha is complete without the water views and the wildlife that shows up for them.

Kayakers paddling through calm mangrove water

Matlacha Pass is a designated aquatic preserve, and it shows! Visitors are greeted by our local show-offs, the dolphins, along with curious manatees, jumping mullet, ospreys, roseate spoonbills, herons, egrets, and a variety of marsh birds. There are several kayak rentals on the island, and they will give you a map of the best places to paddle.

The famous Great Calusa Blueway paddling trail runs right through Matlacha. Every day you’ll find wildlife lovers paddling the pass and photographing the sights.

For the less adventurous, join Captain Cathy’s Sunset Cruise or Island Tiki Tours. Both take you around the island by pontoon, so someone else does the navigating. Huck’s Landing rents watercraft for your own island adventures.
