Calusa peoples and local lore

Before the bridge, this was Calusa country. Two places on Pine Island tell the story.

Museum of the Islands

The Museum of the Islands is the perfect start to a Matlacha trip. Run by locals, it helps visitors understand the Calusa people, the early settlers, the working watermen, and island life, and why this community holds such a special place in Florida. The museum is in the heart of Pine Island and houses local artifacts. Visit the gift shop for books by local authors and vintage postcards. Hours vary with the seasons, so check the website before planning your trip.

Randall Research Center and Calusa Heritage Trail

This Pineland site property is now mostly state-owned and serves as an outdoor museum and educational resource open daily to the public, including the Calusa Heritage Trail and classroom. RRC staff manages the daily operations of the Pineland archaeological site and oversees the operations and public programing at the Calusa Heritage Trail. Visitors are able to traverse Calusa shell mounds and canals, and a diversity of coastal terrestrial and wetland habitats. RRC staff and volunteers offer tours to the public, as well as special tours for schools and many other groups of all ages. The center provides a dedicated classroom space, interpretive signs, a gift shop, and annual events that bring together scholars with community members.
