Things to do
Matlacha art scene
This tiny historic village has blossomed into one of Southwest Florida’s most distinctive art destinations.

Funky and colorful, Matlacha is a walkable, shoppable village. Bright Caribbean-colored buildings, whimsical sculptures, and galleries full of local work line Pine Island Road, turning a drive across the famous bridge into an instant immersion in color and creativity.
This is not a polished, high-end art district. Matlacha’s art scene is authentic, accessible, and deeply rooted in the island’s character: Florida landscapes, marine life, folk art, jewelry, pottery, and delightfully quirky pieces made by artists who live and work nearby.
What sets Matlacha apart is its intimacy. Artists often work on-site or live nearby, and conversations with the makers are common. The art reflects the surroundings (mangroves, boats, sunsets, fish, and the quirky island lifestyle) rather than mainland trends. Prices range from affordable souvenirs to substantial pieces, so casual browsers and serious collectors are equally welcome. The streetscape itself is public art: painted facades, murals, bottle trees, and outdoor sculptures turn a simple stroll into an experience.
How the island got its colors
After the mid-1990s gill-net ban hit commercial fishing, affordable cottages and a laid-back lifestyle attracted writers and artists looking for inspiration. Residents painted homes and storefronts in bold turquoise, pink, yellow, and lime green, and galleries sprang up alongside the remaining fish houses, creating the funky, mixed-use feel that defines the island today.
Hurricane Ian dealt a heavy blow in 2022, damaging or destroying several galleries and studios. Yet the creative community has shown remarkable resilience. The Matlacha Art Walk returned in 2025, the Pine Island Art Association reopened its restored building, and artists keep creating, selling their work, and teaching others to make vibrant pieces of their own.
Must-visit galleries and shops
Matlacha Menagerie
An eclectic favorite packed with local art, jewelry, garden pieces, pottery, wind chimes, and Florida-inspired treasures. The waterfront patio is a peaceful spot to enjoy the mangroves.
Island Visions
Local art and curiosities with a true Florida feel: paintings, jewelry, crafts, and whimsical finds.
Leoma Lovegrove Gallery
Long a signature stop for the late artist’s bold, impressionist-expressionist paintings of Florida flora and fauna. The colorful garden, once home to painted palms, a Beatles stage, and other playful touches, embodied Matlacha’s spirit. The original location was heavily damaged by Ian, and efforts since have focused on recovery and limited reopenings.
Trader’s Hitching Post
One of the island’s longest-running galleries, specializing in authentic Native American jewelry and crafts.
Island Flair
Work by local artists, plus space for art classes.
Other shops and pop-ups carry on the tradition of accessible, island-inspired creativity. You’ll find everything from serious paintings to ceramic mermaids, carved fish, stained glass, and paper-quilled coastal creatures.
Art Walk and community events
The Matlacha Art Walk takes place on the second Friday of the month, typically 5 to 8 p.m. Local businesses stay open late, vendors set up along the road, live music fills the air, and visitors browse art, crafts, and more. It’s a lively, community-driven evening that draws locals and day-trippers alike.
The Pine Island Art Association, based in the restored Pine Island Art Building at Matlacha Community Park, offers affordable classes and workshops for all skill levels, in media such as watercolor and mixed media.
Matlacha’s art scene is a living expression of island resilience and creativity. Whether you’re hunting for a unique piece of Florida art, browsing whimsical folk creations, or simply soaking in the rainbow-hued streets, this tiny village delivers an unforgettable dose of color and inspiration. Cross the bridge, slow down, and let Matlacha work its magic.
